Welcome

A first note on what SOFT STATIC is, why it exists, and why this little corner of indie music is worth building slowly.

Hello, and welcome to SOFT STATIC.

My name is Will, and this is my current passion project. It's meant to be a space dedicated to the world of indie music. The pieces you'll find here cover all sorts of corners of that world: the industry, the artists, the songs themselves, and everything in between. Hell, I often have a hard time staying on topic. It might stray even further than intended.

I started SOFT STATIC after spending some time managing a small local artist. Through that experience, I came to understand just how much exposure matters. Looking through the countless rising acts scattered throughout my music library, I realized how much love and respect I had for artists that most people have never heard of. My goal is to slowly grow this into a reliable platform that helps people get their names out there while also giving me an excuse to write about whatever happens to be on my mind.

Music has been an obsession for most of my life. I started messing around with my mom's childhood Yamaha keyboard when I was probably eight years old. When COVID struck, I picked up the guitar. As cliche as it sounds, it was "Freaking Out the Neighborhood" by Mac DeMarco that convinced me I needed to learn how to play. Later, when I got my first looper pedal, I started taking songwriting and arranging more seriously. But ideas come from inspiration, and it was the music I discovered along the way that pushed me to grow as a musician.

There are so many pockets of indie music that I've become fascinated with over the years. The deeper I dug into songwriting, recording, production, and the music industry itself, the more I wanted to learn. I figured the best way to force myself to keep learning was to share what I found. The vehicle I've chosen for that is right here.

My hope is that somewhere within these archives, someone's question about an artist gets answered through an interview, or a musician discovers a piece of advice that helps them finish a song, release a project, or simply keep going. One of the best pieces of life advice I've ever accidentally come up with is this: be a sponge. Absorb as much as you're willing to. You'll be surprised by how often it comes in handy later.

That said, I've got a lot on my plate. As of writing this, I'm a university student heavily involved in clubs, balancing jobs, and doing my best to stay focused on academics. I work hard to keep this project moving, but right now there's no financial incentive behind it. The fuel comes entirely from wanting to be here. And I want to be here.

You can expect regular articles, interviews, and whatever else catches my attention. If that ever changes, I'll let you know. If there's even one person on God's green earth who wants to hear me yap about music, that's more than enough reason to keep going.

My email, contact@softstaticmusic.com, is always open for questions, suggestions, recommendations, corrections, or even grievances. This is a (stunningly handsome) one-man operation, and things occasionally get lost in the shuffle, so be patient.
